As the giving season is here, it is a time defined by generosity, compassion, and community spirit. The Arc of LaGrange County invites our neighbors to reflect on one of the most meaningful gifts anyone can offer: the gift of an opportunity. For individuals with disabilities, meaningful employment is more than a paycheck. It is confidence, independence, and belonging. It is one of the greatest gifts a community can give.
This year, employers across LaGrange County stepped forward to open their doors to individuals eager to contribute their skills, talents, and dedication. These opportunities have transformed lives. We have seen people discover their strengths, form new friendships, learn new tasks, and take immense pride in doing work that matters. I would like to say thank you to Brethren Retreat at Shipshewana Lake, Blue Gate Hospitality, LaGrange County Council on Aging, Lakeland School Corporation, Pizza Hut, and The Arc of LaGrange Thrift Store for hiring an individual we support.
During a season centered around giving, these employers remind us that generosity isn’t always wrapped in ribbon. Sometimes it looks like providing a tour of your facility or offering a job shadow. Other times it’s taking time to train someone who learns differently. Often it is simply believing in someone’s potential when others may have overlooked it. Inclusive employment doesn’t just benefit the individuals hired; it strengthens the entire community. Workforces gain dependable employees, improved morale, and a culture rooted in acceptance and teamwork. By choosing acceptance, businesses reflect the genuine spirit of the season through meaningful acts of kindness.
This December, we encourage our community to continue supporting our individuals receiving employment services. Whether that is through a job shadow, interview, or hiring an individual with a disability; you can make a difference. Employers, community partners, or residents can help champion a future where every person, regardless of ability, has access to meaningful employment.
