Spreuer Park’s new baseball diamonds are expected to be completed next year.
They have been under construction since last year. So far work has consisted of putting up fencing, building three separate diamonds, and preparing the fields for further work. A concession stand complex is in the design stage and will require approval by the LaGrange County Plan Commission. LaGrange County Planning and Zoning Administrator Robbie Miller said the project was postponed after appearing on a plan commission agenda earlier this year.
While parking was originally planned for an undeveloped area across the street from Spreurer Park, the parking lot is now slated to be constructed on the north end of the property.
Also part of the final phase of construction will be installing an irrigation system, placing mounds, doing dirt work and designing dugouts.
According to LCYC member and president of the LaGrange baseball and softball league, Brett Bateman, the total project cost so far has been around $200,000.
Construction still has a long way to go, said Bateman.
“We hope the fields will be done in late spring or early summer,” said Bateman. “I think these fields are a win for LaGrange. When a family moves in, the first thing they look for is something to get their kids out of the house all summer.”
For many years, LaGrange baseball and softball leagues have used Lakeland School Corporation and LaGrange County 4-H grounds.
“We’ve relied on Lakeland schools and the 4-H grounds for their fields. These new fields will allow us to have everyone in one place,” Bateman said.
Bateman said he hopes that the LaGrange baseball and softball league will still be able to use Lakeland School and LaGrange County 4-H grounds to host baseball and softball tournaments.
Once the fields are open, community groups will be able to sign up to use the baseball diamonds.
