Miller, Lawrence win sectional track titles

Lyndon Miller of Westview and Dominic Lawrence of Lakeland each brought home individual championships from the East Noble boys track and field sectional meet held last Thursday night in Kendallville.

Miller nudged DeKalb’s Jaren McIntyre at the wire in the 800-meter race. Miller stopped the clock at 2:02.72 and McIntyre at 2:02.77.

Lawrence also claimed his blue ribbon in the 110-meter hurdles in dramatic fashion. The Laker crossed the finish line in 15.46 seconds, .03 of a tick ahead of runner-up Drew Yates of West Noble.

Both Miller and Lawrence would earn second place ribbons and the regional berths that came with them at the sectional. Miller procured runner-up honors in the high jump (6-1), while Lawrence sped to second place in the 300-meter hurdles (41.80).

The duo headlined a list of 11 county tracksters who extended their seasons with their efforts in Kendallville.

Individuals advancing with second-place results in their events were Lakeland’s Owen Troyer in the long jump (20-11), Westview’s Juraj Hurny in the 400 meters (51.87) and Prairie Heights’ Hank Glasgo in the 3200 meters (9:53.27).

Two local relay teams also netted second place in their races. One of them was the Prairie Heights 1600-meter relay unit of Isaac Burns, Jaden Daniels, Sam Zolman and Trenton Daniels (3:34.99). The other was the Lakeland 400-meter relay group of Lawrence, Andre Thompson, Gonzolo Rubio-Sanchez and Arnau Quintanilla-Labios (44.48).

Earning regional buds with third-place results in the sectional were Jaden Daniels in the 200 meters (23.54), Glasgo in the 1600 meters (4:34.09) and the Laker 1600-meter relay quartet of Lawrence, Rubio-Sanchez, Zeke Wachtman and Troyer (3:37.18).

Hurny’s fifth-place finish in the high jump (5-10) was good enough to garner him a spot in the regional due to the three-participant standard.

All qualifiers from the East Noble sectional will compete at the Marion regional to be held on the campus of Indiana Wesleyan University this Thursday. The meet is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

Angola won the sectional team championship with 113 points. East Noble was second with 98.5.
