Westview outscored NECC and county rival Prairie Heights, 29-13 in the fourth quarter to seal a 45-27 victory over the Lady Panthers Tuesday night in Emma.
The win snapped the Lady Warriors’ four-game losing streak against their eastern neighbors. It also leveled their overall record at 1-1.
“Our defense dictates how we play and tonight, particularly in the second half, I thought the girls played great on the defensive end of the court,” stated Westview head coach Ryan Yoder. “Keeping them (Prairie Heights) off the scoreboard put us in a good position to pull away with some timely shots offensively.”
Westview emerged from the first half clinging to a 16-14 lead. Freshman forward Mykayla Mast netted nine of her game-high 17 points in the opening quarter to help the Lady Warriors build their slim margin.
The difference was three (19-16) early in the third period when the hosts put together a 13-0 burst which earned them a 32-16 edge a couple of minutes into the final stanza. After two free throws by Lady Panther Ava Boots stopped the run, Mast and Hope Bortner sank consecutive three-pointers to boost the Westview lead to 20 (38-18).

Bortner would sink another triple and a free throw in the latter stages of the game to complete her 13-point night.
“We don’t have to rely on just one player to do the bulk of our scoring,” cited Yoder. “Mykayla (Mast) got us started in the first half and Hope (Bortner) picked it up in the second. And in the next game it could be two other girls who lead us in scoring. We still have some girls figuring out their roles, but they are working hard to do so.
“I thought we worked the ball well offensively and looked for the best shot instead of settling for the first shot,” Yoder added. “This is a good win to build on.”
Bortner, Mast and Sara Lapp each grabbed four rebounds for the Lady Warriors. Lapp also collected four steals. Andrea Miller topped the winners in assists with six.

Boots wound up with 10 points and seven rebounds to pace Prairie Heights, which fell to 0-2 with the setback. McKinlee Kain added eight markers, Kylee Leland and Emily McCrea both garnered four boards and two assists, and Breonna Glasgo snagged four caroms.
