During Skyler Carpenter’s track and field career she earned eight school records, numerous sectional and regional records and allocated seven individual state championship titles. Carpenter is a Westview High School graduate, class of 2012.

Of those titles, Carpenter defended the title in the 300m hurdles from her sophomore to senior year, winning the event three years in a row and breaking the state record in her junior year performance with a time of 42.03. She also defended her 100m Hurdles title and long jump title from her junior year to senior year performance.

In her final state meet performance, Carpenter was awarded the Mental Attitude Award, given to student athletes for excellence in attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability. Carpenter was also awarded Indiana’s Gatorade Player of the Year Award and nominated for Wendy’s High School Heisman national award during her final track and field season. After the completion of the state finals, Carpenter participated at the Midwest Meet of Champions and competed on Indiana’s 4×100 meter relay taking first place and went on to win the long jump and place second in the 300m hurdles.

 

 

On a national level during her high school career, Carpenter won the United States Track and Field AAU Junior Olympics national title in the 400m hurdles as a sophomore with a time of 59.96. In her junior year, she placed in the top eight nationally in both the 400m hurdles and 100m hurdles. At the end of her high school career, Carpenter was ranked third in the nation in the 300m hurdles, which attracted the attention of many university track and field programs.

Carpenter went on to receive a full athletic scholarship to Vanderbilt University where she double majored in Medicine, Health and Society and Child Development. During her time there, Carpenter was awarded the United States Track and Field Coaches Association Academic All-American award and put her place on the Vanderbilt record books competing in the schools 4×400 meter relay team, the 800 run and her specialty, the 400m hurdles. Carpenter competed in numerous SEC championships and qualified for the regionals every year of her collegiate career. Carpenter went on to receive a Masters in Nurse Midwifery at the Vanderbilt School of Nursing and now works as a Certified Nurse Midwife in Atlanta, Georgia.
